How to read appliance error codes without panicking

What washer, dishwasher, oven and fridge error codes actually mean, which ones you can fix yourself, and which need a technician.

An error code on a washing machine display looks alarming, but it's really just shorthand. The appliance has a set of sensors, and when one of them reports something outside the expected range, the control board stops the cycle and shows a code so nothing gets damaged.

That's useful to know, because it means most codes point to a condition rather than a broken part. The drain was slow. The door didn't latch. The load was lopsided.

Codes fall into a few groups

Once you've seen a few brands' tables, a pattern appears. Nearly every code fits one of these groups:

The same letters mean different things

This catches a lot of people out. On an LG washer, OE means a drain problem. On another brand, a code with an O could mean something else entirely. Dishwashers from one company might use E4 for a flood sensor while another uses it for a heating problem.

Search with your exact model number and the code together, and trust the table in that model's manual over generic lists.

What to do when a code appears

  1. Write it down, including whether it's flashing and how many beeps you hear.
  2. Look at the obvious thing. For drain codes, is the hose kinked? For door codes, is a towel caught?
  3. Power cycle by unplugging for a few minutes.
  4. Run a short test cycle. A rinse and spin is a quick way to test a washer.
  5. If the code returns immediately, the condition is still there. Look up the code for your model and follow the troubleshooting steps.

When to call a technician

Stop troubleshooting and call for service if you notice a burning smell, water leaking onto the floor, a code that returns after you've fixed the obvious cause, or any code the manual itself says requires service. Also check whether the appliance is still under warranty before opening panels, since some repairs by owners can void it.

Hidden diagnostic modes

Many appliances have a service or diagnostic mode that shows stored codes. These are meant for technicians and are sometimes documented on a tech sheet tucked behind a panel. They can be useful, but running component tests on a machine you don't know well can cause damage. If you try it, follow the tech sheet exactly.
