Thermostat wire labels decoded: Rh, Rc, W, Y, G, O/B

What each thermostat terminal letter means, why the C wire matters for smart thermostats, and the safety checks to do before replacing one.

Replacing a thermostat looks simple, and for most homes it is. The part that trips people up is the wiring. Wire colors aren't standardized in a way you can rely on, so the letters on the old thermostat's terminals are the only trustworthy guide.

First: check the voltage

Most central heating and cooling systems use a low voltage thermostat, typically 24V. Some electric baseboard heaters and wall heaters use line voltage thermostats, running 120V or 240V directly. Those are a completely different product and can cause serious injury.

Signs of a line voltage thermostat: thick wires (similar to household outlet wiring), wire nuts connecting them, and a label showing 120V or 240V. If you see those, most smart thermostats won't work and you should stop and consult an electrician.

For any thermostat, turn off power to the heating and cooling system at the breaker before touching wires.

What the letters mean

On some older systems one wire does two jobs, and different brands label terminals differently. The installation manual for your new thermostat is the final word.

Why the C wire matters

An old mechanical thermostat didn't need power. It was just a switch. A smart thermostat has a screen, a processor and Wi-Fi, all of which need steady power. The common wire (C or Rc) provides that.

Without it, many smart thermostats "steal" small amounts of power through the heating or cooling wires. That works on some systems but causes clicking, short cycling or dropped connections on others. Brands offer workarounds, such as Google's Nest Power Connector and ecobee's Power Extender Kit, which add a common connection at the furnace.

Doing the swap safely

  1. Turn off power at the breaker and confirm the old thermostat's display is off.
  2. Remove the faceplate and take a clear photo of the wires in their terminals.
  3. Label each wire with tape using the terminal letter, not the color.
  4. Check your new thermostat's compatibility tool, usually in its app, with those letters.
  5. Wrap the wires around a pencil or tape them to the wall so they don't fall inside.
  6. Connect them to the new base following its installation guide, then restore power.

If you find unused wires tucked behind the wall plate, don't connect them unless the installation guide tells you to.
