How to descale the K-Classic

If cups are coming out short or the brewer is slow, it needs descaling. Keurig suggests doing it every three to six months, or when the descale light comes on.

  1. Turn the brewer off, empty the reservoir and remove any water filter.
  2. Pour the full bottle of Keurig descaling solution into the reservoir, then fill the empty bottle with water and add that too.
  3. Put a large mug on the drip tray, power on, and brew the largest cup size with no pod. Discard the liquid.
  4. Repeat until the Add Water light comes on, then let the brewer sit, powered on, for at least 30 minutes.
  5. Empty and rinse the reservoir, fill it with fresh water to the max line, and run at least 12 water-only brews.

Add Water light stays on

Usually the reservoir isn't seated fully, or the magnet that tells the brewer the reservoir is there is stuck. Lift the reservoir out, check the float inside moves freely, and set it back down firmly.

Maintenance

Cleaning the needles

Grounds can block the entrance needle under the pod holder lid and the exit needle in the pod holder. Carefully clear them with a straightened paper clip, with the brewer unplugged. This fixes a lot of weak or partial brews.

02 Finding the model number

The model and serial number are on a sticker on the bottom of the brewer.

05 Owner questions

Can I descale a Keurig with vinegar?

Keurig recommends its own descaling solution and says using other products may affect the warranty. Many people use vinegar anyway. If you do, rinse very thoroughly afterwards.

Why is my coffee weak?

Choose a smaller cup size for a stronger brew, and check the needles for clogs. Descaling also helps if the brewer is pumping slowly.
